Verified Reviewer |Resolved: HYSA Not Worth It
- - Five figures in emergency funds were in Synchrony HYSA; access was delayed by verification, unlike instant updates at other banks.
I didn't lose any money.
My narrative explains how I solved this issue myself.
I saved five figures in emergency funds in my Synchrony HYSA. I could not log onto the site without verifying my new phone number.
As an infrequent phone user, I did not remember my old number. I called Synchrony to change it. I verbally verified all they asked. The rep claimed that she could not send me a verification text.
Then she requested a video of me revealing my drivers license. I refused. Their alternative was to send me a verification code via snail mail. Within 10 days, I received it.
I called Synchrony again and told them the code. I was informed that it would be 60 days before my new phone number would be posted online. In other words, I would not have access to my emergency funds for two months.
Unfortunately for Synchrony, I held two other HYSAs from ethical banks. They were linked to my Synchrony account.
I withdrew my funds from Synchrony by enacting transfers from the other banks websites.
In comparison, I called my credit card company on the same day. I requested a phone number change. After verbally verifying my identity, they promptly changed my number so that I could log on to my online account. I asked when my phone number would be posted on their site.
They replied, Immediately, and it was. I am adding my experience to the plethora of complaints against Synchrony Bank that are posted online. Im alleging that Synchronys unreasonable delays are ruses for holding funds.
Even though their HYSA interest rates are slightly higher than some other banks, their nefarious money holding tactics are shady. Stay away from this bank, regardless of their enticing interest rates.

Fraud

I want to speak to a live person since you insist, I write at least 100 symbols. Well heres one my identity was stolen.
A credit card was provided to someone who fraudulently used my information and you guys have not yet taken it off of my credit report.
This was back in November, so let me talk to a live person. Is that enough for you?

- - From Dec 2024, all payments made; late interest continues; harassment via emails.
In Feb of 2024, I received notice of non-payment. I checked my bank; the check cleared in May 2025.
I received notice of non-payment. I tried to resolve the issue by phone calls on June 21, 2025. Payment was made for the Nov 2024 missing payment on the credit card and some late charge fees. I made all payments every month from Dec up to this month.
I am being charged late payment interest every month. I owe nothing. Lloyd Snyder, starting in May, I received emails every other day. This is harassment and abuse.
I regret having any dealings with this bank.
Please help; the interest is still accumulating. I am a senior on a limited income.

- - No reply from Synchrony Bank; I had to contact them repeatedly about a 6-day mobile deposit hold on a new July account, and funds are inaccessible.
No, I have not heard back from Synchrony Bank. As a matter of fact, I've had to contact them a few more times myself.
I finally reached a manager who then told me that although it said there were no hold(s) on the funds because it was a new account (opened back in July), there was a 6-day 'HOLD' on any funds deposited through mobile deposit, and I had requested the transfer 4 days before the 6-day hold was up.
Every representative I spoke with at Synchrony knew that this would happen and still failed to inform me of that. I still have not gained access to my account or money.

- - Wire transfer triggered a four-day hold, and I wasn't told it would block access.
- - App showed balance from two mobile checks, with no hold.
Synchrony Bank placed a hold on my account knowing that by requesting a wire transfer 4 days sooner than the 6-day hold for funds to clear, my account was up even though it showed on my account on the app, as well as when I called in, that the current available balance was the amount of the 2 checks which I had mobile deposited, and it stated there was no hold on any amount of the funds. They failed to inform me that by requesting a wire transfer, a hold would be placed on my account and that I wouldn't be able to access any of my money.

- - Activation failed; card was reported lost due to the account.
I almost forgot to mention, Synchrony also allowed me to order a new ATM card for the same account, and when I received it and went to activate it, it wouldn't allow me to. So I called Synchrony and was told that because of what's going on with my account, the card had been reported as 'lost.' Reported 'lost'?
By who? NOT ME.

Very rude
- - Overcharged; charge removed after at least 2 hours.
- - Took 20+ minutes to reach a rep who couldn't answer a simple question.
- - Two reps were aggressive.
I called them because they overcharged me. It took literally more than 20 minutes to get a rep, who couldn't answer a simple question.
This was do to a credit card charge. I then had to speak to 2 different reps. Both were very aggressive and obnoxious. After at least 2 hours they took off the incorrect charge.
This bank is crap. The customer service is crap.
Just to get someone on the phone is an ordeal. I never had this experience with AMEX, CITI or any other carrier.

Synchrony has found a way to get money from customers who pay on time. They added a fee of $1.99/mo without prior notice.
I have fixed payments so was not immediately aware of the extra fee. I paid the account in full (except the added fees) as soon I was aware of the extra charges.
They still refuse to remove the charges. What a scam!

I can't get any help to get into my account. How can I pay my bill without seeing my account?
Everything I run into is just more questions. I'm 80 years old and just need a person to help me with my account.
I have more than one account with y'all. I have given you my last four digits of my Social Security number, my address, and my ZIP code, and I still can't get any help.

Crap service
everytime i tried to make a payment they'd wait too long even for scheduled payments, first attempted payment they waited a week to pull by that time the money was gone the 2nd time it took 4-5 days to pull it and by then the money had to go elsewhere 3rd time was 2-3 days AFTER the scheduled deposit , tried to put a payment on another card that didn't have anything connected to it so i could set the money there and not worry of a auto payment and after specifying that card not the regular one it still kept trying to pull from the original card remove the card removed both cards and the bank. just to get a letter saying the account is closed now due to a number of dishonored payment on this account which is funny after saying here take this money today and they wait 2-7 days so screw them apparently their good for savings but bad for credit

Cant get credit or approval for any consumer loan or credit card services from anyone that uses you as their financial services, Because you have me flagged with a false fraud statement that I already provided proof of, completed bg the agency in question " state farm insurance " currently still my company of choice!! And im flagged by you as cashing a fraudulent check @ walmart that was a refund check that everyone in the state of Michigan was given for each vehicle owned and insured..
i myself got 2 . 1 i deposited to my bank. 2nd one i cashed at Walmart and paid for my groceries.. next time i go to customer service to use services i was denied by you .
Synchrony bank. I called you and the situation was to be handled and closed by you and repair my credit and remove the false flag !!!

Get a hold of me asap please!! I would like to be able to enjoy my time i have left doing what i need and want to do for my family and their future b4 im gone ! Im tired of calling and talking to ai and the non English. I don't have that kind of time to waste anymore!!

Have contacted Synchrony Bank, Experian.com for a credit report evaluation and the state attorney General for fraudulent fees and expenses on the account.
It has been dragging on for 8 months. They have charged my account for something that was returned and refunded more times than I can count.
Now, they tell me I owe deferred interest for an item that was returned already.
You can't get anyone to listen about their error and fix it. Now, they just hang up when I call.

Bad policies
I would give a zero if I could. This bank lowers your credit limit as you pay off your debt.
No missed pmts. Always pay more then minimum. Yet they keep lowering my limit which makes it look like I max out my card ,which lowers your credit score, which they use to lower you limit, which looks like you max out card which lowers your score.
And on and on. They are the worst.

Tell you what pop pop. It's time to join the 21st Century.
Find an email address for this place, send a copy of the front and back of the check and allow them to review. Believe it or not, old people who still write checks oftentimes send them to the wrong place who will cash them.
With this in mind, look at your other accounts to see if you have/had a credit in the amount of your check. Finally, stop writing checks.
